Hi, I'm Julie, Chief Executive Empress

of my little apple green design studio.

Welcome to my blog!

When I'm not out visiting a client or searching for just the right  product for a project, I can probably be found in my happy little studio (painted the perfect shade of green), busy drawing up new ideas for a cool kitchen or a "spa-licious" bathroom. I like to share the fun stuff I find along the way!

Even MORE paint color picks for 2018

Paint colors of the year 2018

A few weeks ago I gave you the low-down on Pantone's Color of the Year for 2018, a deep purple they call Ultra Violet. (This green paint is just to throw you off a little!) Every year this global color company forecasts the next big color that’s going to be an influence in the design world - - in home décor, fashion, beauty, advertising, etc.

In case you missed it, here’s a little encore:

Ultra Violet

The company describes its purple pick as a "dramatically provocative and thoughtful shade." While I'm not sure about the "thoughtful" part, you can't deny it IS dramatic.

This apartment in New York went all out with the violet!

Even MORE paint picks!

Pantone isn’t the only one to predict what colors might be popular this year. Just about every major paint company has their own favorite, and I've pulled together a little collection of the ones I thought were the most interesting. And get ready. Because if paint colors are any indication, we’re in for a bold ride through 2018!

Oceanside from Sherwin Williams

You may remember I showed you this deep peacock blue waaaaayyy back in October as Sherwin Williams’ pick for the year. The bright white furniture and trim really stand out against it and make for a striking room. Here's a video with lots more photos of beautiful rooms painted in Oceanside.

Caliente from Benjamin Moore

Paint color of the year Caliente

What I love about this vivid Caliente is that there’s not a speck of orange or a hint of blue whatsoever, it’s just a true red and it packs quite the punch.

You can bet I’m going to recommend this color the next time someone wants something bold for their front door.

Check out this colorful video about Caliente and what goes into picking Benjamin Moore's choice for the year.

In the Moment by Behr

Behr picked this cool, tranquil color that is “inspired by nature and is a soothing restorative coalescence of blue, gray and green. This comfortable color evokes a sense of sanctuary and relaxation amid our busy, always-on lives. "

Dontcha love the woo-woo descriptions?!

This is what I’d call a transitional color since you can use it in a lot of different design styles including traditional, modern and coastal (“beachy” anyone?), and it would make a nice exterior color as well.

Charcoal Brown by Valspar

This earthy, umber shade feels both sophisticated and natural at the same time. They've paired it with faded red and green accents and I have to say I really like the effect.

Valspar's Golden Ochre

Here's another bright option from Valspar - - an intense, golden shade that says cheery to me. And look how fun it is in this kid's area. It's made a little more sophisticated accented with a color similar to the Oceanside from Sherwin Williams.

Black Flame from PPG Paints

Color of the year Black Flame

This almost-black is a blend of black and navy and, in addition to a wall color, would also work well on cabinets, interior and exterior doors and trim, even on a ceiling. PPG Paints and Voice of Color say that it acts like a black curtain, allowing your other décor elements to take center stage. It sure shows off these different shades of green.

DESIGN TIP: Don't be afraid of these deep dark colors. Pair it with whites, cream, or lighter colors in your furniture and accessories, make sure there's plenty of lighting in the room, and you're good to go.

And speaking of pastels, I'll bet Black Flame would look amazing with...

Graham & Brown's Penelope

Color of the year Penelope

Blush pink is all the rage right now, and this warm, pastel color on the wall isn't going anywhere soon. Dubbed "millennial pink", it's not too juvenile or sickeningly sweet, and looks pretty dang sophisticated with blacks and leathers.

What do you think about some of these colors? Got a favorite? I think mine is the Oceanside, but that Charcoal Brown room sure looks comfy to me too! Leave a comment below. I'd love to hear from you.

And as always, if you're struggling with the perfect paint color for your rooms, I'm just a phone call away. I'd love to help! :-D
