Hi, I'm Julie, Chief Executive Empress

of my little apple green design studio.

Welcome to my blog!

When I'm not out visiting a client or searching for just the right  product for a project, I can probably be found in my happy little studio (painted the perfect shade of green), busy drawing up new ideas for a cool kitchen or a "spa-licious" bathroom. I like to share the fun stuff I find along the way!

RANDOM NOTES FROM MY LITTLE

apple green studio

Not your grandma's wood paneling

September 2, 2017

You’ve heard me say it before, but if you wait around long enough, everything comes back in style.

I’m probably showing my age, but witness the re-appearance of high-waisted “mom” jeans, floral print pants, and even gauchos. And that’s just CLOTHING.

If you’ve lived through a horrible fashion period in high school, you’re naturally reluctant to dive back in again. And it’s the same with interior design trends. You may remember my post a while back about gold plumbing and lighting fixtures coming back in a big way.

Wanna hear the latest thing to make it's way back around? You've probably already guessed from the title of this here article, and yes:  wood paneled walls and ceilings!

I know. You’re probably thinking of the dreary 70's family basement and the dark living room walls, but THIS is waaaay different. It's freshened up and lighter. And BETTER.

This time around, you’ll see the wood used mostly as accent walls and the panels running horizontally rather than vertically.  And everyone seems to be loving it. Every one of the Street of Dreams houses had paneled wood accent walls and/or ceilings this year, and the designers did some creative things with it. And naturally I have photos for show and tell.  :-D

Up against the wall

This accent wall laid horizontally makes the bedroom look nice and cozy. (You can almost hear the gas fireplace crackling across the room. LOL!) That wall is so beautiful, it doesn't need any other artwork to make a statement.

You don't have to install wall panelling vertically, or even horizontally.  A couple of different angles on this niche wall make a stunning backdrop to whatever you want to put in front of it.  (P.S.  Bookshelf/etagere styled by little ol' me.) This stuff happens to be faux wood, peel and stick planks!  It's light weight and very easy to install with a chop saw and a little patience. Says the girl who doesn't have to do it herself.

Here are more of those peel and stick planks, this time in a white washed finish, also installed in "my" house. Very beachy!

Here's another way to use those planks: just run a stripe up the wall.  It's a little hard to see the width of it in this photo, but it's actually a 4' band running up to the ceiling, and it sure dresses up an otherwise plain jane corner.

This wood wall is a nice blend of grays and lends just a touch of "farm house" to the room without going over the top with that.

Off the wall

Wood on the ceiling isn't necessarily out of the ordinary, but it sure adds some drama to this room in House #1, The Oregon Dream. It's a bit hard to see, but there's also wood underneath the overhead walkways - - nice little detail there.

More wood overhead. Not something you normally see inside a tray ceiling, but I like it. And what a lovely thing to wake up to every morning.

And one last photo from "my" house.  The wood planks on the ceiling play up the architectural detail of the soffit that runs around two sides of the master bedroom.  (The real miracle is how did I take this photo without showing up in the mirrors?!)

If you can't tell, I love love love the wood walls I'm seeing everywhere. So what do YOU think of them? If you'd like to look into faux or real wood planks for your house, here are a few websites to check out for inspiration or to buy the stuff for yourself:
